Highbury homes
Highbury has Georgian terraces around Highbury Fields, large Victorian villas on Highbury New Park and Victorian terraces elsewhere, many of them split into flats.
Highbury Fields and Highbury New Park
Both are Islington conservation areas. The council’s design guide says an Article 4 direction applies to Highbury Fields, so some works that were permitted development need planning permission. In Highbury New Park an Article 4 direction removes the right to add external wall insulation on walls facing the road.
Lofts in Highbury
A mansard or a rear dormer on a Highbury terrace needs planning permission when the house is in a conservation area, and the council’s design guidance for each area sets out what it expects from roof extensions.
Islington planning
Planning applications for Highbury go to Islington Council, which publishes a map of where its Article 4 directions apply.
Highbury, Islington and Finsbury Park
Highbury sits between Islington, Finsbury Park and Stoke Newington. Our conservation area planning guide explains what changes inside a conservation area.
