Highgate building stock
Highgate Village contains some of the oldest residential property in our catchment. Georgian terraces from the 1700s, Regency villas from the early 1800s, Victorian terraces from the late 1800s, and a small handful of 20th-century infill. The High Street and the village core are Grade II listed almost street by street; the surrounding streets are conservation area with strict design guidance from Camden Council.
Listed building restoration in Highgate
A typical Highgate listed property restoration includes: original sash window restoration (rather than replacement), lime plaster repair and replastering, lime mortar repointing where original Victorian or Georgian brickwork has been damaged, period cornicing and ceiling rose restoration, original door and architrave repair, restoration of period fireplaces. We work alongside the heritage consultant and conservation officer on the listed building consent and the listed building consent conditions.
Working with Camden Council
Camden has a dedicated heritage and conservation team. Listed building consent applications typically take 8 to 12 weeks. Conservation area consent is faster, around 6 to 8 weeks. Both processes require a heritage statement which we coordinate with the heritage consultant; we deliver the works strictly to consent and to the agreed material specification.
Loft conversions and extensions in Highgate
Most loft conversions in Highgate Village are Velux-only because of conservation and listing controls. Outside the village core, hip-to-gable and L-shape mansard conversions are typical and require planning consent. Rear extensions are rare in the conservation area; where granted they are typically conservation-area-sensitive single-storey glass-and-brick designs.
