Wapping homes
The former warehouses along Wapping High Street and Wapping Wall were converted into flats, and newer blocks and townhouses were built around the old docks. Many of these flats have exposed brick, timber beams and large windows that shape how a kitchen or bathroom can be laid out.
Wapping Pierhead and Wapping Wall
Tower Hamlets has two conservation areas in Wapping, Wapping Pierhead and Wapping Wall, and St Pauls Shadwell lies to the east. Inside them external changes such as new windows or roof additions usually need planning permission. Several of the warehouses and Pierhead houses are listed buildings, which also need listed building consent for internal work that affects their character.
Working in managed blocks
Works in a Wapping flat usually need the consent of the freeholder or managing agent under the lease, and buildings often set working hours, lift bookings and rules for protecting the common parts. We agree these before the start date.
Tower Hamlets planning and building control
Planning applications in Wapping go to Tower Hamlets Council. Internal works to a flat that is not listed usually need no planning permission, but bathrooms, kitchens and electrical work must still meet the building regulations.
