Chigwell homes
Much of Chigwell is large detached and semi-detached houses on generous plots, many built from the 1930s onwards, around the older houses of Chigwell Village. These houses often take two-storey and single-storey extensions, loft conversions with rear dormers and full internal refurbishments.
Chigwell Village conservation area
Epping Forest District Council has designated Chigwell Village as a conservation area. Inside it a side extension, a loft conversion that adds roof volume and external cladding need planning permission. Demolition is subject to additional controls, and we check whether planning permission, prior approval or listed building consent is needed for the building.
Green Belt around Chigwell
Much of the land around Chigwell is Metropolitan Green Belt. Permitted development rights still apply to a house in the Green Belt, but an extension that needs planning permission normally has to avoid a disproportionate addition to the original building to count as appropriate development, so we size the design against that test before an application goes in.
Planning and building control
Planning applications for Chigwell go to Epping Forest District Council. Where an extension is permitted development we still apply for a Lawful Development Certificate, which gives a buyer’s solicitor written proof that the work was lawful.
Chigwell, Loughton and Woodford
Chigwell sits between Loughton, Buckhurst Hill and Woodford. See the house extension page for extension formats and the conservation area planning guide for houses in Chigwell Village.
