Barkingside homes
Much of Barkingside is interwar and post-war semi-detached and terraced housing. Semis suit hip-to-gable loft conversions and rear extensions, and terraces suit rear dormers.
Barnardo’s Village Homes conservation area
Redbridge has designated Barnardo’s Village Homes in Barkingside as one of its sixteen conservation areas. Inside it a side extension, extra roof volume and cladding need planning permission.
Lofts and extensions
Outside the conservation area a loft conversion within 40 cubic metres on a terrace or 50 on a semi, and a single-storey rear extension within 3 metres, can be permitted development, subject to the conditions. We confirm it with a Lawful Development Certificate before work starts.
Redbridge planning
Planning applications for Barkingside go to Redbridge Council. The council’s borough-wide Article 4 direction for small houses in multiple occupation means that changing a house into a small house in multiple occupation, shared by three to six unrelated people (use class C4), needs planning permission.
Barkingside, Gants Hill and Chigwell
Barkingside sits between Gants Hill, Ilford and Chigwell. See the loft conversion page for hip-to-gable options.
