Mile End homes
Mile End has Georgian and Victorian terraces around Tredegar Square and Stepney Green, smaller Victorian streets near Mile End Park and many council and housing association flats. A lot of the terraces have been split into flats.
Conservation areas in Mile End
Conservation areas in and around Mile End include Tredegar Square, Clinton Road, Ropery Street, Carlton Square and Stepney Green. Tower Hamlets publishes a character appraisal and management guidelines for each, and we read the one for the street before design starts.
Houses and flats
Householder permitted development rights apply to houses only. In a flat, an extension or a dormer needs planning permission, and structural work usually needs the freeholder’s consent under the lease. In a house outside a conservation area, a rear dormer within 40 cubic metres and a single-storey rear extension within 3 metres can be permitted development on a terrace.
Tower Hamlets planning
Planning applications for Mile End go to Tower Hamlets Council. In a conservation area demolition is subject to additional controls, and we check whether planning permission, prior approval or listed building consent is needed for the building.
Mile End, Bow and Whitechapel
Mile End lies between Bow, Whitechapel and Bethnal Green. See the full house refurbishment page for what a refurbishment includes.
